It may occur in either the crown portion or the root. Fracture of roots can still be classified into three. Of which this article, deals with the fracture at apical one-third and apical two-thirds of the root. This article deals with various techniques for the removal of the broken apical third or two-third that remains in situ.

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:3] [Pages No:39 - 41]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10085-8125  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Indian medical education was structured and believed in summative assessment. Competency-based medical education (CBME), on the other hand, is to train the learner to become a holistic primary care physician. Competency-based medical education's competencies are so designed to bridge the gap between theoretical aspects with practical clinical skills, tempered with compassion and empathy to become a health professional guided by a value system having sound ethical principles.

Microcytic Anemia: A Brief Overview

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:6] [Pages No:42 - 47]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10085-8126  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Microcytic anemia is caused by hemoglobin (Hb) deficiency synthesis in erythroid precursors, leading to reduced mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of red blood cells. It is the most common type of anemia, primarily due to iron deficiency, followed by chronic disease, and thalassemia. Diagnosis of the spectrum of microcytic anemia requires an adequate history taking and physical examination to search for specific indicators of each disease with a further investigation as indicated for a definitive diagnosis. The treatment of microcytic anemia varies depending on the cause of the disease. The prognosis of the disease also varies depending on the factors underlying the anemia condition.

Prevalence of Kuhn Frontal Cells in Frontal Sinusitis: A Literary Review

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:3] [Pages No:53 - 55]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10085-8123  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

Background: The relationship between frontal cells to frontal sinus disease pathology remains an understudied area. Caucasian population were studied in most previous studies of the pneumatization pattern of the frontal recess, whereas there are very few reports on the prevalence of frontal recess cells and their relation with frontal sinusitis in India. The purpose of this review is to determine the frequency of occurrence of frontal cells and to determine whether the size of the frontal isthmus or the presence of frontal cells is related to the presence of frontal sinus disease in various articles. There are a lot of studies that appear in the Western literature, but there are less Indian studies on this subject. Materials and methods: In this article, we reviewed around 25 various randomized, clinical, and experimental trials conducted between 1940 and 2016 and which were published in various Indian and American journals. The literature search was conducted after using the key words chronic rhino-sinusitis, Kuhn frontal cells, frontal recess, frontal sinusitis, functional endoscopic sinus surgery, and computed tomography from Pubmed, Cochrane, Proquest, and Google Scholar. Conclusion: There was no significant relation between any particular frontal recess cell and the size of the nasofrontal isthmus as the cause for frontal sinusitis in majority of studies, and therefore we concluded that various factors, along with the pattern of pneumatization and mucosal edema, contributed to the pathogenesis of chronic frontal sinusitis.

Communication Skills: The Lifeline of Health Care

[Year:2020] [Month:July-December] [Volume:9] [Number:2] [Pages:4] [Pages No:56 - 59]

DOI: 10.5005/jp-journals-10085-8128  |  Open Access |  How to cite  |

Abstract

The word infodemic is a blending of two words information and pandemic. Modern information technologies have mixed facts with fear, speculation, and rumor that has caught the world with information overflow. Medicine is an art and science. Uncertainty is one of the key principles of medicine. “Medicine is a science of uncertainty and an art of probability” mused William Osler. The information collected from available data from world regulatory bodies of public health reflects the nature and importance of uncertainty with newer facts emerging from more studies regarding the virus and the disease. The indirect gesture of a leader not wearing a face mask projected by social media negatively influences ordinary people to decide whether to wear a mask or not. The 100-day agenda of President-elect Joe Biden of the USA mandates that every citizen wear a face mask after millions of US citizens were infected by coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19). Social media have a more social responsibility to relay true information regarding the wearing of face masks. The process of communication regarding the pandemic like any other research question must go through tests of veracity, validation, and reliability. As health issues have become a global phenomenon, social media need to have a physician-scientist to verify the information to be relayed. It will be more effective if that information is communicated by a physician forming the media team, say a TV channel. The art of communication skills relating to pandemics needs to be taught and trained to disseminate facts by social media.
